Hostel Trailer

Analysis

The Hostel is a horror film set in an empty, abandoned building. This location is used for people to watch and torture peoplefor pleasure.

Analysing the trailer I recorded many different camera techniques used. This refers to shots, angles, movement and composition.

Like many trailers or opening sequences an esablishing shot is used first to show a wide frame to make the audience familiar with the surroundings. The shot in this trailer has been used to fit the whole building in the frame and introduce the audience.

Following this a mid shot is used to put the man being tortured into the centre of the frame. Explaining this in more detail a high angle is used to look down on the tools/weapons being used to torture. Extreme close ups were also used to show the filth of the seweres and the detail of the toes when they're being clamped. Fixed camera positions are also used to focus the audience so they are involved and have no where else to look.

Moving on to mise-en-scene, there are a range of props used throughout the trailer, mainly used for torturing. These include, weapons, tools, masks and aprons.

Low key lighting is used while the trailer is set in the worn building to set the scene and dull mood in the atmosphere. As well as this a spotlight is often used to highlight the character either being the victim or the pleasure on the toturers face.

In terms of sound the only dialogue used throughout the whole trailer is the word 'Hostel' at the end of the trailer. This gives a good impression as the trailer is powerful enough to get across to the audience without dialogue. Apart from this there is only yelling, and the sound of weapons, water and movement. As well as the non-diagetic music being played.

Part of the trailer includes strong editing techniques because of the speed of movement they want to produce. Slower shots are used but begin to speed up, this also then gives a strobe effect to the shots. Pacing up and down using flash techniques increases the tension and suspense for whats happening in the scene. Following this a fade out, or fade to black is used to calm the scene, for example when they have completed the torturing. Fade to black also is used at the end of the trailer for the glowing text to then appear, with a flame styled font. Where the text is super imposed.
